Leon Bollee 1897 “La Voiturette” 650 cc single AIV Léon Bollée came from a family of inventors; his father, Amédée Bollée père, was the most important pioneer of steam road vehicles in France. Léon patented a mechanical calculating machine in 1889, gaining a gold medal from the Exposition Universelle held that year in Paris, but soon turned to vehicles. In 1895 he presented a small three-wheeled petrol car that he named “Voiturette”. It was powered by an air-cooled, single cylinder 650cc (3hp) engine with bore x stroke of 75 x 145 mm and employed hot-tube ignition and three forward gears. The Voiturette was at the time the fastest petrol-engined vehicle on the road. It had a tubular frame with a steel footwell at the front to protect the passenger’s feet from puddles on the road and the driver sat at the rear. This was a practical layout because he could then communicate with his (lady)passenger and still have his eyes on the road. The Voiturette sold well and several hundreds were made for Léon Bollée by Hurtu & Diligeon in Albert; only the prototypes were made at the Le Mans Bollée factory. In 1897 modified versions won the Paris-Dieppe race at 24 mph and the Paris-Trouville race at 28 mph. In 1899 the vehicle was superseded by a 4-wheeler and in 1901 the design rights were sold to Darracq. Later on Bollée became fascinated with aviation: the first flight by the Wright brothers in Europe was made in August 1908, at Léon’s request. Unfortunately he was seriously injured in an air crash in 1911. Worn out by the effects of his injuries, stress and overwork, he died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on 19th December 1913, aged only 43. The name “Voiturette” however was taken up by both the trade and public in France as a name in general for a small light car and so it continued to be used.
Leon Bollee 1897. Yesterdays motorcycles. Netherlands. ca 1897 Leon Bollee Tricar-Tricycle . Single cylinder ca 800cc 4-stroke engine Automatic/atmospheric inlet valve Hot tube ignition, so there is no spark plug used for the ignition. Instead of a spark plug ( not yet invented/perfected in 1897 ) there is a hollow tube outside the cylinder head as an extension of the combustion chamber. An external gasoline burner heats up the tube to red hot and this provides the heat/spark to ignite the compressed air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. There is a 3-speed gearbox which works remarkably well. Flat leather belt drive to rear wheel. Braking is by moving the complete rear wheel with drive pulley forward against the brake block. This also reduces the tension on the drive belt and the belt will run free on the front drive pulley. By moving the combined hand lever / gear change lever backwards the belt drive will be tightened ( clutch ) and one is on the move again.
I had the opportunity to see one of these very rare Voiturette tricars at a local ride out today, and what a fantastic piece of early motoring history it is as well. The 811cc single cylinder engine has 3 forward gears and no clutch, and the drive is taken up by a lever that moves the entire rear wheel backwards in the frame to take up the slack in the belt, which allows it to grip the pulleys and provide drive, and the ignition is by a hot tube instead of the electric spark plug and coil system that we know today. This works by a gas burner that heats up a tube that is screwed into the cylinder head and the heat ignites the fuel air mix that is supplied by a carburettor. These machines do a little over 20mph and were first made at the end of the Red Flag laws in 1896 which previously required among other restrictions, a person to walk in front of self propelled vehicles with a red flag to warn of approach. The speed limit was also increased in the same year, and now motor vehicles were permitted to do 14mph.
Starting a 123 year old (1896) 1896 Léon Bollée Voiturette tricar. You have to set it on fire first to start it as it does not have a spark plug. It has a metal rod that you must heat up with a flame (yes really!) before it will start.

Remise en route d'une Maurice Léon Bollée de 1924
If you ate a magic time donut and travelled back to the year 1895 with the intent of buying a sports car, do you have any idea what you'd buy? It doesn't matter, because you'd really only have one choice: the Bollée Voiturette. This single-cylinder, three-horsepower, mid-engined monster was, arguably, the first production sports car ever made. Galpin Motors' very own Beau Boeckmann invited Jason to put this thesis to the test on his 1897 Léon Bollée Voiturette. - Subscribe to Jalopnik: 🤍 Visit us at: 🤍 Like us at: 🤍 Follow us at: 🤍 View us: 🤍 Watch more from Jalopnik friends: Splinter: 🤍 Gizmodo: 🤍 Kotaku: 🤍 Deadspin: 🤍 Jezebel: 🤍 Lifehacker: 🤍 io9: 🤍 Sploid: 🤍 The Root: 🤍 Earther: 🤍 Drive free or die! 🤍

C'est probablement la famille la plus célèbre du Mans. La famille Bollée, c'est surtout une saga incroyable... Avec trois générations d'inventeurs. Le musée des 24 heures leur consacre une exposition jusqu'au 15 avril.

Peugeot 1903 2HP Type "C" 239 cc Although a prototype De Dion-engined Peugeot bicycle was displayed at the Paris Salon in 1898, the first motorized cycles to leave the factory were actually tricycles with De Dion & Bouton engines. The popularity of the tricycle was unchallenged at first, but by 1902 the motorized bicycle started to take the lead: at the Paris Salon in December 1901 81 motorised cycles were exhibited, of which there were only 21 tricycles or quadricycles. One of the sixty motorized bicycles present was a Peugeot, propelled by a 1 ½ HP ZL engine. The engine was clipped to the front down tube and had a displacement of 198 cc. Its weight was only 35 kilograms and a cruising speed of between 25 and 40 km/h was attainable. For 1903 the engine was placed in the "New Werner Position" and now two models were catalogued, one with 2HP ZL engine and the other with Peugeot's own 2 HP power source, both types having the same cycle parts. The "Type C' has a bore x stroke of 66x70 mm and the engine is fed by a Longuemare carburetor. Relatively few of these machines were produced, so this is a pretty rare survivor. This early veteran is in authentic condition but she will need some TLC to put her back on the road again.

This is rare footage of the world's first car's engine igniting & running. From Wikipedia: After developing a successful gas-powered two-stroke piston engine in 1873, Karl Benz focused on developing a motorized vehicle. His Patent Motorwagen (or Motor Car), introduced in 1886, is widely regarded as the first purpose-built automobile, that is a vehicle designed from the ground up to be motorized. Benz unveiled it officially on July 3, 1886 on the Ringstraße in Mannheim, Germany. The vehicle was patented with German patent number 37435, which Benz applied for on January 29, 1886.

The Oude Klepper is a superb event for motorbikes and threewheelers built before 1921, and gathered about 35 on 20 August 2023. Organised by Danny Velle, Martine Beernaert, Ingrid Vanacker and Dirk Colpaert, it starts from the best-kept seaside place on the Belgian coast De Haan and then wanders off into the polders. Entrants came from Belgium, Holland, Germany, England and France, and rode machines of many different marques, some obsolent, some that still exist : Léon Bollée, La Nef, Antoine, Wanderer, White & Poppe, Triumph, FN, Premier, Bradbury, Williamson, Excelsior, Thor, Saroléa, Royal Enfield, Rover, Douglas, Indian, BSA, Harley-Davidson, Simplex, ACE, Henderson.
