Map making смотреть последние обновления за сегодня на .
Various brief shots illustrating the changing countryside; a tree being felled; workman at a table looking at plans while another holds a pneumatic drill beside a 'Road Works Ahead' sign; a man on a machine chucking up earth; a large pipe being lowered into the ground; a new (and nearly empty) motorway (this is from CP 325 - 300 M.P.H. Road). Various shots of Bert Smith using a tellurometer; a machine with a kind of aerial dish on the front that measures distances through sound waves for ordnance survey maps; another man sits at the 'speaker' of the machine and makes notes. Three men are seen at adding machines in an Ordnance Survey office; a girl feeds some cards into an IBM computerised sorting machine. Various shots of Dennis Braten using a stereo plotting machine which traces a 6 inch scale map from an aerial photographic plate. On a field by a parked Land Rover, Norman Facey uses a sight rule on a 6 inch detail survey and draws across the map. In another Ordnance Survey office, some men are seen working on very detailed maps; panning C/U of one of the maps. M/Ss and C/Us as a draughtsman tracing hill outlines on wax-coated glass; very exacting work! M/S as two men fix a map into position on a wall; an elderly man, George Dart, operates a huge camera to take a copy of the map. From the negatives, zinc printing plates are etched out; M/S of a printing plate being loaded into a printer. Comical M/S of Joe Hollingsworth mixing some red ink on a table; it looks like ketchup! M/Ss of the maps being printed. M/S of a couple, Janet and Alan Franks in a village looking at a Ordnance Survey map then walking off. Note: The two Ordnance Survey centres seen are at Southampton, Hampshire and Chessington, Surrey. On file are notes on the workers and processes seen plus an article from 'The Motor' about map making. FILM ID:145.04 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV. Travel through the history of mapmaking and discover what big mistakes cartographers made about the world’s geography. For thousands of years, people made both functional maps and what are known as cosmographies, illustrating the earth and its position in the cosmos, often including constellations, gods, and mythic locations. These maps were meant to depict the world's geography, but weren't necessarily useful for navigation and contained some glaring mistakes. Kayla Wolf shares mapmaking’s biggest blunders. If you're heading out on the road for your vacation this year, you'll probably get directions from a GPS or navigational system. Does that mean that the traditional map is a relic of the past? Mark Albert hits the road to find out.
Here is a quick tutorial on how to make quick and dirty maps in QGIS that you can print out at home! Though physical paper maps are not so common these days, with the changing nature of warfare (and surveillance), and just the general reliability issues that come with technology, having an old school navigational method is needed now more than ever before. And since the costs of buying paper maps can add up quite quickly, it is nice to have the skills to make your own maps and print them out at home for a fraction of the cost. Skills like this are certainly not as flashy or cool as other skills, but we feel that the "boring stuff" is what wins wars...which is something that most people do not want to hear. How does mankind find its way around the planet? How do people know where roads lead and what lies on the far side of the ocean? Did Marco Polo have an atlas showing the way to China? Did the Romans mark the borders of their empire on maps? For thousands of years distant lands and foreign nations were mysteries. And yet accounts of these mysteries were available – in travel books and on maps of the world. 📺 It's like Netflix for history... We’re back to nitpick about fantasy map design! While natural borders like rivers and mountains are a major part of how borders get drawn on a map, they’re not the only factor. My talk will briefly review my work and how I got to where I am, why I make the kind of maps and artwork I do, and my experience running workshops for adults to make maps of the place or place that mean the most to them. How our stories about place and our love of these sites and landscapes has grown faint in our culture. Bringing this connection to the forefront of our minds fosters a vitality and rational for making particular choices for the future of our planet. Where do you care about? is a question that deserves more of our attention, because it engenders action and true stewardship. Molly is a visual artist, map-maker and geographer. She discovered geography at Middlebury College and went on to receive a Ph.D. in Human Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She received a Watson Fellowship and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to explore the value of map-making for communities and individuals. Molly has worked in environmental and art education for organizations, universities and schools across the country. Her current projects involve map-making with children, conveying climate change through landscape painting, and custom maps for place-based organizations. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍
