Die Handlung gut der Hälfte seiner Romane – darunter „Amerikanisches Idyll“, „Verschwörung gegen Amerika“ und „Der menschliche Makel“– ist in Newark angesiedelt, im jüdischen Viertel seiner Kindheit, wo er die sozialen Spannungen aufmerksam beobachtete und seine Wahrnehmung für den Untergang des „American Way of Life“ schärfte. It stands on the River Trent, the A1 – the ancient Great North Road – and the East Coast Main Line railway. Situated on the banks of the River Trent, Newark is a picturesque town steeped in history. The ruins of Newark Castle have had a huge influence on the unique character of the town. Though the current remains were built in the early 12th century, there has been a castle on the site since 1068. Left in ruins by a turbulent history, the grounds were landscaped in 1887. Newark’s market place is overlooked by the Georgian Town Hall. The town has become famous for its six annual antiques fairs, held at Newark County Showground, and thousands of antique hunters from across the world descend on the fair’s 4,000 stalls in search of a bargain. Other attractions near the town include the Newark Air Museum – home to 65 aircraft and cockpit sections. Nearby, in North Clifton, is also home to a relaxing meditation centre and Japanese garden. Famed for its role in the English Civil War, one of the town's main historic attractions is Newark Castle. The castle was a Royalist stronghold but its key position on the banks of the River Trent meant that the castle has been severely damaged over the years. In 2015, the National Civil War Centre opened as the UK's only museum dedicated to telling the story of the brutal conflict. You can also take the Nottinghamshire Civil War trail which takes you to the key locations around the town of Newark as well as other sites in Nottinghamshire related to this turbulent chapter in our history. As well as the markets in Newark, shoppers can also head to the Buttermarket for indoor shopping and well known high street brands. There are also plenty of antique and vintage shops dotted around the town which are perfect if you enjoy looking for treasures. For aviation enthusiasts, Newark Air Museum is a must-see attraction. As well as having a wide range of aeroplanes to see (including a Vulcan, Buccaneer and Hawker), the museum hosts a wide range of events including open cockpit events. Sitting in the grounds of a former farmhouse, you'll also find the National Holocaust Centre and Museum, an educational facility and rememberance centre which promotes an understanding of the roots of discrimination and prejudice and emphasises how we must examine and learn from tragedies such as the Holocaust. L'histoire de la ville cosmopolite et sinistrée de Newark, laboratoire dans les années 1960 de la lutte pour les droits civiques, racontée à travers les regards de Philip Roth et Amiri Baraka, deux auteurs qui y ont grandi. Newark n'est pas New York, sa voisine située de l'autre côté de la rivière Hudson. C'est une petite ville de banlieue dont la spécificité industrielle est tombée dans l'oubli. La promesse de prospérité avait jadis fait venir dans cette cité du New Jersey des vagues d'immigrés européens, puis des Noirs du Sud fuyant la violence des lois ségrégationnistes. Dans cette ville longtemps pluriethnique, les remous du mouvement des droits civiques, la pauvreté endémique des Noirs, l'omniprésence de la mafia, de la violence policière et de la corruption déclenchent en 1967 des émeutes sanglantes. Les élites blanches de Newark abandonnent alors la ville, qui se dépeuple pour devenir majoritairement noire et qui sombre dans le marasme. We are still in exploring Newark, NJ arguably one of the most notorious cities in the country and definitely on the East Coast. Today we will be driving through parts of the South and West Wards historically it's worst areas to see how things are today. Newark is surrounded by wealth and prosperity, with Manhattan only being 16 miles east, and Jersey City practically next door it's a wonder it's taking so long to trickle over. We drive along Bergen Street, Clinton, Hawthorne and Avon Avenues and eventually get over to Springfield Ave passing landmarks and hot spots along the way. Newark was/is known for it's dilapidation, crumbling infrastructure, menacing public housing and just flat out being lawless. The city is trying to make strides in all these areas. We are very familiar with the city of Newark and have been visiting this area for years so we can see the change. This is the best the city has looked and most functioning the city has ever been (in my lifetime). My question is, will the city continue on upward path? Does this look like an inviting city to you? Back in Newark again! Today we take a stroll through the Ironbound Section of Newark, NJ or its East Ward to visit the infamous Hyatt Court Housing Project. This project is infamous in the Newark area for being a hardcore Crip neighborhood, specifically the Newark faction of the Los Angeles west coast "Grape Street Crips". The Ironbound itself is known as the best ward or section of the city to live in but the projects are the projects. These projects are less than a 5 minute drive and at most a 10 minute walk from Mildred Terrell Homes aka River View Court, another infamous housing project that the city is preparing to be demolished. The Funeral Mass for Newark Firefighter Augusto "Augie" Acabou is being held at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Entombment to follow will be private. Acabou, 45, and Wayne "Bear" Brooks Jr., 49, both made the ultimate sacrifice just over one week ago. The two Newark firefighters were killed in a cargo ship fire at Port Newark.
