Tyrants and Dictators - Manuel Noriega (MILITARY HISTORY DOCUMENTARY) Between them, they were responsible for countless atrocities and deaths. They are power-hungry men who maintained an iron-clad grip over the respective nations they ruled. Under their leadership thousands of innocent civilians lost their lives as a result of their murderous regimes. These are the world's most notorious tyrants and dictators.
In December 1989, 25,00 US troops invaded the small, Central American republic of Panama. But this was not a war against some communist regime or terrorist group – this was a drugs bust, aimed at arresting Manuel Noriega, the dictator of Panama, who was wanted on trafficking charges in Miami. Awkwardly for the US, Noriega had been a major CIA asset for decades – even as they knew he was becoming massively embedded with the cartels flooding the streets of the US with coke. This is how US intelligence shielded Noriega, even as he trafficked cocaine and laundered cartel millions – and also how the War on Drugs came to replace the Cold War as the central feature of US foreign policy. Panama: Former ruler Manuel Noriega passes away Manuel Noriega, Panama's former ruler, has died aged 83, Panama's President Juan Carlos Varela announced on Twitter. Noriega was the military ruler of Panama from 1983 to 1989, when he was removed from power by the United States during the invasion of Panama. Noriega was held in a medically induced coma after suffering brain hemorrhaging in March. The hemorrhage occurred after Noriega underwent surgery to have a tumour removed from his brain. After more than 20 years in US and French prisons, Panama's former military dictator, Manuel Noriega is on a plane bound for his home country. He was sentenced while still in Paris to 60 years in jail, for his involvement in three murder cases in the 1980s, but is likely to appeal the convictions, arguing he did not have the opportunity to defend himself. The 77-year-old could also push for home detention, under Panama law. Al Jazeera's Paul Brennan reports.

Bush said General Manuel Noriega surrendered voluntarily to American troops, was arrested by Drug Enforcement Agents at Howard Air Force Base in Panama, and had been placed aboard a plane and was en route to Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. Bush told reporters at the White House that the capture meant all four of the American objectives had been met in the massive military strike he ordered two weeks ago - restoring democracy, safeguarding the Panama Canal, protecting American lives and apprehending the former Panamanian dictator. Noriega's decision to surrender voluntarily marked the end of a diplomatic minuet that began when the deposed Panamanian dictator showed up at the Vatican Embassy in Panama City on Christmas Eve and requested political asylum. 🤍 22 ans après sa chute, l'ancien homme fort du Panama, Manuel Noriega, retourne chez lui mais pour un nouveau séjour en prison. Les autorités françaises ont remis l'ex-dictateur aux autorités panaméennes ce matin à l'aéroport d'Orly. Noriega était détenu en France depuis 2010, où il avait été condamné à 7 ans de prison pour blanchiment d'argent. La cour d'appel de Paris avait dit oui à son extradition le 23 novembre dernier.
