This place, the capital of the most densely populated major country in the world, is also the fastest growing city on the planet. This is an examination of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The constant supply of melting snow and water that flows down the Himalayas to the south creates the largest delta in the world. Much of it runs through Bangladesh, an agricultural paradise with some of the richest soil on the planet. But all that water is also a curse. With more than 700 rivers flowing into the Bay of Bengal, many of the country’s residents become displaced when monsoon season arrives in mid June every year. Annual rainfall in Bangladesh is over 78 inches, and two-thirds of the country’s 64 districts experience regular flooding. Combine that with the highest population density of any major country, and you understand why Dhaka is adding more than 400,000 residents a year. If even a little of Bangladesh’s precious land is overtaken by water, many of its people instantly become homeless. To top that off, when fields and villages flood, these already struggling micro-economies become even less sustainable. So people pour into the capital because that’s where the jobs are. More than two million people now work in Dhaka’s many garment factories. That industry is the engine of the Bangladeshi economy, producing 80% of its exports. But it can be a hard industry to break into if you’re a farmer coming from the countryside, so many unskilled people find work in the off-the books economy. There’s a reason why this is known as the rickshaw capital of the world. Cash gigs like vegetable salesman, barber, shopkeeper, boatman, and cycling cabbie make up nearly 4 out of 5 jobs here. Average pay for this full-time work is less than $100 a month. Development is a tough nut to crack. In order to raise revenue to provide better services and solve problems like traffic congestion, the city needs to bring these people out of the shadow economy. That idea was examined in the Global Post’s excellent report on Dhaka from a few years ago: [Erik German, Global Post] “Legitimizing this vast slum economy would mean compelling millions of vegetable sellers, shop owners, barbers to get licenses, pay taxes, and formalize working conditions. It’s a gargantuan task.” Dhakka wasn’t always so low in the global economic pecking order. In its heyday, as the commercial capital of the Mughal empire in the 17th century, it was one of the wealthiest and most prosperous cities on the planet. The Venice of the East, known then as Jahangir Nagar, was a worldwide hub of the cotton and silk trade. Its palatial caravansary, the Bara Katra, sheltered merchants traveling along the Grand Trunk Road, one of the oldest and longest thoroughfares in Asia. Then, Dhaka fell into two centuries of turmoil that saw its status decline. First, the British took control in 1765. When they were forced out in the middle of the twentieth century, the city became the capital of Eastern Pakistan. Bangladesh finally won its independence in 1971, but only after suffering heavy damage during many battles. One of the legacies of two and a half centuries of power struggle in this region is its confusing and hard to define borders. The India-Bangladesh boundary is one of the strangest in the world. One look and it's obvious, Dhaka is taking in people from the entire region—Bangladeshi or not. This great migration is overwhelming the city’s infrastructure and services, which simply can’t keep up. Still, there are some obvious things the country should be doing to help Dhaka better manage its growth. As in many unplanned cities of it’s size, Dhaka’s police, utilities, and roadways are controlled by a dozen or more national authorities, mostly run by political appointees.”

Bangladeshi people have been very welcoming and curious since foreign tourism in the country is almost nonexistent. Exploration started in the capital city - Dhaka - the tenth-largest and seventh-most densely populated city in the world. I love so many things about chaos, street noises, smells, the inability to walk in a straight line, and the new environment, which actives all my senses for survival. Dhaka's craziness exceeded any experiences I have ever had in any big city, including Old Delhi. Travel in Bangladesh is unique. It’s not an easy or mainstream destination to travel to. Also, the visa process is not easy to process, and your shining western passport would not help much. But exploring the "other side" and avoiding the average has always been my goal with South Asia travel, which is exactly what makes Bangladesh so special. 🇧🇩 Day 1 Bangladeshi Food! With 🤍PetukCouple 🎥 Best Indian Food in Bangkok: 🤍 🔔 SUBSCRIBE: 🤍 Don’t miss new food videos! DHAKA, BANGLADESH - Welcome to Dhaka, one of the most exciting and busy cities in the world! Today is Day 1 in Bangladesh, hanging out with Rasif and Ipsha ( 🤍PetukCouple ). We’re first eating a huge Bangla home cooked meal at home before trying some local neighborhood street food. And ending today with a massive hilsa (ilish) fish fry in mustard oil - one of the national foods of Bangladesh! Literally right off the airplane we headed over to Rasif and Ipsha’s home where they cooked a huge meal of over 18 different Bengali foods. Everything from beef curry to eggplant with egg, moringha drumsticks, fish curry and duck curry. The abundance and variety was outstanding and it was my first ever Bengali meal in Bangladesh! Next up on this Bangladeshi food tour we walked out on the streets in their Dhaka neighborhood to eat some local street food snacks. We started with an amazing liver jhalmuri (30 BDT ($.035). Jhal means spicy and muri means puffed rice, and this is one of the most popular and common Bengali street food snacks. Especially with the liver, green chilies, and mustard oil, it was fantastic. Continuing on the street food tour we ate some deep fried fast food like chicken rolls and Bangladeshi chicken nuggets. Then on to a stall that served amazing bhel puri and chotpoti - an incredible mix of chickpeas and spices, green chilies, onions, coriander, and tamarind sauce. The street was so tasty and without a doubt the bhel puri (20 BDT ($0.23 each) was my favorite snack of the night. Finally to complete this Day 1 Bangladesh food tour we drove outside of Dhaka about an hour to Mawa Ghat, a famous location along the Padma River to take a ferry, and to eat the national fish of Bangladesh - hilsa (ilish). You choose your fish, we chose three, plus some extra fresh water prawns. The fish is cleaned and sliced in front of you, then marinated in turmeric and chili before being shallow fried in fragrant mustard oil. Additionally with the fried fish tails they smash them with onions and chilies and mustard oil to make Bhorta / Vorta - which is a common Bangla food preparation of ingredients that are smashed together to bring out their flavors. We had two types of fish vortas, an onion vorta, and a tomato vorta. It was an outstanding meal with incredible friends in Bangladesh! Old Dhaka is known for its amazingly congested streets, energy, being the center of fabric trade, and also for its amazing history of food - especially meats. Haji Biriyani (🤍 - First up we took a cycle rickshaw directly to Haji Biriyani, since 1939, and probably the most famous biryani in all of Old Dhaka. Their biryani is unlike any other biryani I’ve had, fluffy like a could, fragrant from mustard oil and green chilies, and meaty. So good, it’s a place you have to eat when you’re in Dhaka. Beauty Lacchi and Faluda (🤍 - Next up, another legendary place for lacchi, similar to a lassi, and faluda. Their lacchi is sweet and sour, like an icy refreshing yogurt drink. Old Dhaka Breakfast snacks - Next up on this ultimate street food tour we had some local pastries which are popular for breakfast, right out of the tandoor. Hanif Biryani (🤍 - Another legendary place for biryani in Old Dhaka is Hanif Biryani. It’s not as fluffy as Haji Biriyani, but has a nice fragrance of rose water. Bismillah Kabab Ghar (🤍 - Another highlight of any Bengali street food tour in Old Dhaka is Bismillah Kabab Ghar where they specialize in all sorts of fried kebabs - they are not grilled kebabs as I would typically think, but more like stir fried kebabs full of spices, onions, and green chilies. Their kidney fry and chicken chop were outstanding. Mama Kabab House - Next up we went for grilled kebabs, an assortment of fire grilled chicken and mutton grilled until crispy. Grilled Fish - Everyone said it was a first for them to eat something other than meat in Old Dhaka, but the bbq fish was very tasty especially with all the chutneys. Fresh Juice - You’ll find an abundance of juice stalls in Old Dhaka, and one of the favorites in cashew milk - more like a milkshake of blended cashews. During our food tour in Dhaka, Bangladesh we undertook a food walk in the bustling and historic neighboourhood of Shankari Bazaar. It is a Hindu dominated locality with myriad street food options. The name is derived from the word 'shankhari' which refers to the artisans who make shankha a kind of bangle made from conch shell that is worn by married Bengali women. The first stop was a mobile fuchka vendor near Jagannath University. He usually caters to the locals and students of this establishment and keeps changing his location with the passing day. Unlike the Indian counterpart, these fuchka were smaller in size and the thick paste-like stuffing consisted of mashed potatoes, onions, cucumber and spices. They are placed in a bowl and dunked in spiced tamarind water. It was zesty, tart and refreshing. Next we went to a small eatery beside Jagannath University which was named Joy Bikrampur Mistanna Vander. It was full of locals enjoying breakfast. We got our spot at one of the shared tables. Most of the people were having soft and flaky cheka porota with some kind of sweet dish like halwa or rosogolla. Very few of them were having sabzi. We too tried the above combo of porota and mishti. The savoury porota went very well with the dense rosogolla and soft chhana mithai. After this local favourite meal we reached another eatery which is renowned for their fish meal. But first we couldn't resist ourselves from trying a quintessential Bengali shingara that has notes of panch phoron in it. Afterwards we ordered some rice and foli macher jhol which was a light curry made of bronze featherback fish and some veggies. There were many other fish curry options too but we picked this as we haven't had it before. The curry was simple yet hearty. From there we visited Radha Madhav Confectionery in the vicinity which is known for non onion garlic pure veg confectionery items. Since we were full, we opted for a patishapta as it looked really tempting. The gooey khoya kheer stuffing was truly divine. While heading to the next sweet shop, we stopped by a roadside vendor selling homemade kasundi in a huge handi. Locals have encircled him to get their stock of this essential condiment that goes well with many food items. Next at Joy Ma Mistanna Vandar, we first marveled at the symmetrical cutting of a fresh batch of kacha sondesh that came in a tray and then went on to try a piece along with chom chom and ledikeni. All these three sweets are traditional and popular. Kacha sondesh was soft and luscious, ledikeni was warm and delightful while the chomchom was densely and slightly sweeter than the other two. From there we moved to Kashmir Biryani House which is an iconic biryani destination in this locality. The unusual name has a somber yet random story behind it. The genial owner shared some anecdotes about this old local favourite eatery and then treated us to small portions of their best sellers-chinigura kacchi biryani, basmati kacchi biryani and polao and chicken roast. The chinigura biryani was fragrant and delicious and so was the pulao and chicken roast. Around evening we joined our friend Anish from Plates & Tradition at Tanti Bazaar. Here we had some chanachur mix from Jamai Bou Chanachur cart. They are a local snacks chain that serves chanachur mix from these small, tidy and quirky mobile carts. These can be found across Dhaka and Chittagong. With all the zesty and contrasting elements, the chanachur mix was a riot of flavours in mouth. After this we landed up at a cha stall for some milk tea as it was what we were craving for. The frothy tea was accompanied by Potata which is a tasty biscuit by Pran Foods. Made of potato and herbs, it seems to be a cross between a wafer and biscuit. Then we headed to our last destination Jagannath Bhojanalay. The owner was overwhelmed to have it and his enthusiasm was all over. He proudly introduced us to his small yet busy non onion garlic rice meal place where one can have a hearty homestyle meal without burning a hole in the pocket. He served us almost all the dishes from his menu but since we were quite full, we tried just five of them - cholar dal, echor, kashmiri paneer curry dhoka, kochu saag and chatni. But what touched our heart was the warm hospitality of the gentleman. He even accompanied us out on the streets post meal and offered us some murudi, khaja and paan. It was a memorable time relishing the popular street food here at Shakhari bazar in the company of the locals.

After trying the street food in Old Dhaka, I’m convinced that it’s some of the best street food around the world, and that Street food in Bangladesh is worth spending a lifetime exploring! First up, we’re going to the Dhaka University area to try a famous street food in Dhaka, the Kola Bhorta, an ULTRA complex and delicious street food made in a mortar and pestle. It had hog plum, mustard, olive, tamarind, sugar, chili, coriander, and chili, and was made by the most friendly vendor! It was spicy, sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and very intense! Next, we’re bringing you to the New Market area of Dhaka, right outside Old Dhaka, an area bustling with food stalls and super fast paced bustle. The street food vendors here work with ULTRA FAST speed and you can tell that everyone is in a hurry because there is so much food and street stalls packed in here. I ordered a Bhel Puri, a kind of crispy puff filled with chickpea and lentil mash and chili with tamarind chutney and topped with a cold cucumber, tomato, and onion salad. It was an amazing street food to try! Next up, we’re bringing you to a FAMOUS Restaurant in Dhaka, the MAMA Haleem! Here, an ULTRA THICK beef stew is prepared with lentils, wheat, mustard, and Bengali spices in a HUGE POT! It tastes so delicious and spicy and is one of the most filling street foods you’ll ever eat in the whole world! After that amazing street food in Bangladesh, we’re bringing you to eat a famous breakfast in Bangladesh at star hotel. Here, one of the most delicious mutton food stews AKA pays is served bright an early every day at 6am. We got up early and were surprised to see the place was PACKED with locals slurping away at this delicious Bengali food! We also ordered a beef heart curry, dal, local tea, and naan. It was an incredibly filling and flavour packed breakfast! And before visiting the BRAIN FRY KING of Bangladesh, we’re going for a FAMOUS biryani dish in Old Dhaka, the Kachi biryani. It was prepared in these huge pots with big goat leg pieces and was one of the most aromatic biryani’s I’ve ever tried! It had a caraway flavour and was a little mustardy as well! Mustard is such an important part of Bengali cuisine, and we fell in love with the food during our trip mainly because of this mustard flavour in everything, it’s so delicious and fluffy!! After the AMAZING Biryani, we’re bringing you to our final stop, the BRAIN FRY KING of Bangladesh! Here, you can taste amazing Brain fry and beef chap marinated in a ton of spices and put into a deep and dark oil that is intensely flavourful. When it comes out, you grab a luchi and wrap it up and pop it in your mouth, and it’s quite delicious!
